Southern Europe is confronting a heightened wildfire risk, attributed to intensifying fire-promoting weather conditions exacerbated by climate change and the El Niño phenomenon. Despite a potential decrease in the overall number of wildfires, the severity and frequency of extreme weather events are on the rise, presenting substantial challenges to existing firefighting capacities.
A new analysis conducted by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) consortium has provided further evidence linking climate change to these dangerous conditions. The study found that human-caused global warming made the extreme heat and drought conditions observed in Spain at least 20 times more likely. In France, similar extreme weather events were found to be twice as likely due to climate change. These findings underscore the escalating impacts of human-induced warming on European summers and the increased susceptibility to wildfires.
