Western Australia's state government is set to invest A$9.8 million in Generation Steel's proposed electric arc furnace (EAF) mill in Collie. The mill is planned to produce 450,000 tonnes per year of rebar using recycled scrap.
This state funding, which will be matched by Generation Steel, is intended to advance pre-development activities following a positive feasibility study. WA Premier Roger Cook announced the pledge on June 12, adding to a previous A$4.5 million commitment from the government.
Generation Steel, formerly known as Green Steel of WA, is working towards a final investment decision by late 2026. Construction is expected to commence soon after, with the goal of commencing steel production within two years. This project marks the state's first steel mill and the first new steel mill constructed in Australia in over three decades.
The company has also entered into a letter of intent with Australian methane pyrolysis developer Hazer to supply up to 85,000 tonnes of graphite over a 10-year period for use in the EAF.
