A significant iron mining complex in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, has temporarily halted its operations due to ongoing Russian attacks on maritime logistics in the Black Sea. The Southern Mining and Processing Plant announced on July 28 that it has begun suspending excavation work and reducing operations.
The company stated that the decision was prompted by "constant attacks by the aggressor country on civilian merchant ships heading to Ukrainian Black Sea ports." This has led to a backlog of iron ore shipments that cannot be exported, forcing the plant to cease production. The company, co-owned by Metinvest, Ukraine's largest mining firm, plans to resume operations in August while current employees focus on repairs and maintenance.
Metinvest emphasized the critical importance of unblocking Black Sea logistics routes for the sustainable operation of the mining and metallurgical industry, as well as the broader Ukrainian economy. The company urged state authorities to implement maximum measures to protect port infrastructure and merchant vessels.
Recent weeks have seen an increase in Russian targeting of civilian vessels in the Black Sea. On July 26, a civilian cargo ship, the Golden Leo, sank near Odesa after sustaining significant damage from Russian missiles on July 19. Ukraine's Sea Ports Authority reported that the vessel, which was carrying grain, lost seaworthiness and subsequently sank. The attack on July 19 resulted in ten fatalities.
