Heatwaves could increase food prices due to supply chain disruptions

While a short period of hot weather may not immediately translate to higher prices, experts warn that prolonged drought conditions could significantly disrupt the supply chain. Professor Manoj Dora from Anglia Ruskin University highlighted that a lack of animal feed could be a primary driver of price surges. He also noted that imported goods, such as wine from countries like France which have also experienced high temperatures, could face both quantity and quality issues.

Farmers, like David Wheatley from Cambridgeshire, anticipate being more affected than consumers, as supermarket contracts are often agreed a year in advance. This means farmers may not receive higher prices despite lower yields. However, the possibility of importing food from other countries could mitigate some of the impact on supermarket prices, though global weather patterns could affect these supplies as well.

The British Retail Consortium acknowledges that climate change presents challenges for retailers and suppliers. Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability policy, stated that extreme weather can affect crop yields and put upward pressure on prices. Nevertheless, he assured that retailers are experienced in managing supply disruptions and will take necessary steps, including sourcing from alternative suppliers, to minimize the impact on customers.
