Key facts
- CMA CGM completed an 8,000t biomethanol bunkering at Shanghai port on August 15-16.
- This operation is the world's largest single biomethanol bunkering to date.
- The CMA CGM Osmium, a 13,000 TEU containership, was refueled by SIPG's methanol barge Haigang Zhiyuan.
- Shanghai Electric supplied 6,300t and CIMC Enric supplied 1,700t of the biomethanol.
- This bunkering is part of a long-term agreement between CMA CGM, Shanghai Electric, and SIPG.
French shipping company CMA CGM has successfully completed the world's largest single biomethanol bunkering operation, refueling its 13,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containership, the CMA CGM Osmium, with 8,000 tons of biomethanol at an anchorage in Shanghai port. The operation, which took approximately 15 hours, was carried out by Shanghai International Port's (SIPG) 12,800 deadweight tonnage (dwt) methanol barge, Haigang Zhiyuan.
This significant bunkering event follows a previous delivery of 3,640 tons of biomethanol to the CMA CGM Osmium in Shanghai in March. Data compiled by Argus indicates that SIPG has now delivered a total of 25,967 tons of biomethanol at Shanghai port in 2026.
The biomethanol supplied for this record operation came from two sources: Shanghai Electric provided 6,300 tons from its hybrid bio- and e-methanol plant in Baicheng, Jilin province, while CIMC Enric supplied the remaining 1,700 tons from its biomethanol plant in Zhanjiang, Guangzhou province. These supplies are part of a long-term agreement that CMA CGM entered into with Shanghai Electric and SIPG in March 2025.
