Kimi Antonelli's impressive Formula 1 debut season encountered its first significant hurdle at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on Sunday, where an electrical issue forced his Mercedes to a halt while he was on course for second place. This retirement marks Antonelli's first disappointing result of 2026, ending a streak of five consecutive victories.
Antonelli had been running second, having just overtaken teammate George Russell, when his car stopped on the track. "I feel a bit empty to be fair right now, but it is what it is," Antonelli stated after the race. "Races are like this and it comes and goes."
The failure to finish in Barcelona allowed Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, to significantly close the gap in the championship standings. Hamilton secured his first win since his move from Mercedes last year, reducing Antonelli's lead to 41 points. Russell is now 50 points behind Antonelli.
Antonelli has made history multiple times this season. At 19, he became the youngest pole-sitter and race winner in China, and later the youngest points leader after a victory in Japan. His fifth consecutive win in Monaco equaled Hamilton's longest winning streak record. Mercedes, which had won every race this season prior to Barcelona, also experienced a breakdown with Russell in Canada, which led to Antonelli's victory.
