The Chicago White Sox have traded veteran outfielder Derek Hill to the Philadelphia Phillies as both teams contend in their respective leagues. The White Sox also sent $250,000 in international bonus pool money to Philadelphia.
In return for Hill and the bonus money, the White Sox acquired minor league outfielder Dylan Campbell and minor league infielder José Colmenares. Hill, 30, has struggled this season, batting .213 with four home runs and eight RBIs in 50 games.
The Phillies add Hill to their outfield depth following an injury to Adolis García, who left Wednesday's game with a pulled shoulder muscle. Philadelphia has performed well under interim manager Don Mattingly, holding a 28-12 record since he took over in April.
To make room on their 40-man roster, the Phillies designated right-hander Jackson Rutledge for assignment. The White Sox, who have exceeded expectations this season with a 36-31 record, also activated outfielder Everson Pereira from the injured list and welcomed back shortstop Colson Montgomery to the lineup.
