Vingroup has commenced construction on a significant sea bridge project aimed at connecting its Can Gio urban development in Ho Chi Minh City with the coastal city of Vung Tau. The groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of a project with an estimated investment exceeding 93 trillion VND (approximately $3.5 billion).
The 14.06km sea-crossing road, which includes over 8km of bridges and 3.85km of tunnels, is designed to reduce travel time between the two locations to about 10 minutes. This initiative is part of Vingroup's broader strategy to develop Can Gio into a new urban hub and is being launched alongside two other key maritime and road infrastructure projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ho Chi Minh City's renaming.
Leaders including former President Truong Tan Sang and Politburo member Tran Luu Quang attended the groundbreaking. Ms. Tran Van Anh, Deputy General Director of Vingroup, highlighted the project's strategic importance for the long-term development of Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast region, envisioning it as a symbol of the city's maritime infrastructure.
The project is expected to unlock economic, social, tourism, and urban development opportunities along the southern coastal corridor. Vingroup has proposed developing the project under a build-transfer (BT) model, aligning with the prime minister's vision for modern transportation infrastructure and regional connectivity. The area is poised to become a new urban gateway and economic hub for Ho Chi Minh City.
