Tanzania is expanding its tourism sector beyond safaris by opening an 18-hole golf course in the Serengeti and co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The strategy aims to attract new visitors, boost foreign investment, and diversify the economy.

Tanzania's strategic shift in tourism aims to create a more resilient and diversified economy, reducing reliance on traditional safari tourism and attracting higher-spending visitors and investment through new offerings like golf and major sporting events.
Tanzania is actively seeking to broaden its tourism appeal, moving beyond its traditional strengths of safaris, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the beaches of Zanzibar. A key initiative is the upcoming opening of an 18-hole international golf course in the Serengeti, situated in the Fort Ikoma area, which is designed to attract luxury tourism and allow visitors to experience wildlife while playing.
This diversification strategy also includes co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Kenya and Uganda. Officials believe these efforts will attract a wider range of travelers, stimulate foreign investment in hotels and infrastructure, and boost the economy, which heavily relies on tourism.
Hassan Abbasi, permanent secretary at Tanzania’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, stated that the country wants to showcase it is "much more than" just a wildlife destination. The tourism sector is a significant economic contributor, accounting for about 17% of GDP and over half of the country's service exports. Tanzania aims to increase its international tourist numbers from 2.29 million in 2025 to 8 million by 2030.
Virginia Messina, CEO of the African Travel and Tourism Association (ATTA), supports the investment in new tourism products, noting their potential to open new markets and attract different visitor segments. The government is also focusing on improving air connectivity and promoting lesser-known destinations like Mafia Island and Kilwa Kisiwani.
The 2027 AFCON tournament is seen as a major global showcase, offering an opportunity to highlight Tanzania's evolving image and attract visitors who might combine the sporting event with safaris, beach holidays, or golf. The success of this strategy hinges on careful and responsible development to ensure long-term sustainability.
