Real Madrid has officially announced the signing of defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, securing the player on a six-year contract that will keep him at the club until June 30, 2032. The transfer comes as a surprise, occurring on the same day Cucurella is expected to play for Spain in their opening match of the World Cup against Cape Verde.
According to reports, the signing was a priority request from incoming Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho, who sought to address the club's long-standing issues at left-back. Cucurella, known for his dynamic style, joins other defensive reinforcements like Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries, as well as midfielder Bernardo Silva.
The transfer fee is understood to be around €60 million, potentially rising with add-ons. Chelsea initially signed Cucurella from Brighton in 2022 for £56 million. While Chelsea is selling him for less than they paid, the amortization of his previous transfer cost may prevent it from being recorded as a loss on their books. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were also reportedly interested in the player.
