Letterboxd, the popular social platform for movie enthusiasts, is reportedly in discussions with several potential buyers, including major entertainment companies Netflix, Sony Pictures, and Paramount. The industry newsletter Puck reported that the company is floating a valuation of $250 million.
Tiny, a Canadian holding company that acquired a 60% stake in Letterboxd in 2023, is leading the sale talks. The remaining 40% is owned by co-founders Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow. Other interested parties include private equity firms TPG and Redbird, as well as Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
Since its 2011 launch, Letterboxd has grown to over 26 million users worldwide, particularly among audiences aged 18 to 35. Celebrities such as Charli XCX, Ayo Edebiri, and Martin Scorsese actively use the platform to log films, write reviews, and share watch lists. Hollywood A-listers like Kate Winslet, Dustin Hoffman, and Uma Thurman have also appeared in the platform's "Four Favorites" video series.
In December, Letterboxd introduced an in-app video rental store focused on niche arthouse titles. Tiny has also reportedly spoken with Versant, Comcast's parent company, about a potential acquisition.
