Joby Aviation announced on Tuesday its agreement to acquire defense technology company Resonant Sciences for approximately $500 million. This strategic move aims to expand Joby's operations within the growing defense sector, driven by increased global defense spending.
The acquisition is anticipated to be funded through a combination of about $450 million in cash and $50 million in Joby's common stock. Ohio-based Resonant Sciences specializes in designing, manufacturing, and delivering advanced radio-frequency and mission systems tailored for U.S. national security clients.
The deal, projected to finalize in the first half of 2027, will integrate Resonant's capabilities, including its hybrid aircraft and autonomy technologies, into Joby's structure. This will establish Resonant as Joby's dedicated defense business, while Joby's commercial air taxi initiatives will continue independently. The combined entity will benefit from approximately 1 million square feet of manufacturing, integration, and testing space across the Dayton, Ohio region.
