Japan Airlines (JAL) and Marriott International have entered into a strategic travel loyalty partnership, enabling members of both companies' loyalty programs to mutually share benefits. The collaboration, announced Tuesday, expands on an existing relationship that allowed for the reciprocal conversion of Marriott Bonvoy points and JAL miles.
The enhanced alliance introduces comprehensive reciprocal status matching and mutual member benefits. For Marriott Bonvoy, this is its first such comprehensive alliance with a Japanese airline, while for JAL, it marks its first strategic collaboration with a global hospitality group. This partnership aims to deliver greater recognition, enhanced rewards, and a more seamless travel experience for members across both air travel and hotel stays.
Under the new agreement, all Marriott Bonvoy members will automatically receive FLY ON Points when they link their accounts, with the number of points credited depending on their Marriott Bonvoy elite status. Similarly, JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) members will receive an equivalent Marriott Bonvoy Elite status based on their FLY ON Status. For instance, basic JMB members will receive Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status upon meeting stay requirements, while JMB Sapphire and above members will receive analogous higher elite statuses automatically.
This initiative comes at a time when travel loyalty benefits are highly valued by consumers. A recent Marriott Bonvoy Loyalty Trends Report 2026 indicated that travelers are most engaged with hotel and airline loyalty programs, with Japanese travelers, in particular, seeking to optimize their memberships for collective value across different programs.
