Hong Kong police are set to implement a two-week citywide enforcement operation focused on combating distracted driving and jaywalking. This initiative comes in response to a substantial rise in traffic accident fatalities, which saw a 42% year-on-year increase during the first five months of 2026. Between January 1 and May 31, a total of 51 individuals lost their lives in traffic incidents. Pedestrians represented roughly half of these fatalities, with police identifying jaywalking and inattentive driving as primary contributing factors to the surge in deaths.
