Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) has officially begun construction on its new campus in Ho Man Tin, Hong Kong, with a groundbreaking ceremony held on June 9. The development is envisioned as a "Hub for Community Health and Wellness," aiming to foster professionals in health sciences and advance interdisciplinary education and research.
The ceremony was attended by approximately 200 guests, including Hon Chan Kwok-ki, Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR Government, who highlighted HKMU's role as an applied sciences university supporting manpower development in line with national plans.
The new campus complex, a 19-storey building on a 3,530 square metre site, will offer about 31,770 square metres of gross floor area. It is designed to provide advanced teaching and research facilities, including an integrated health centre for student training and community services, and an interdisciplinary research centre. The project also aims to serve as a "living classroom" for students to gain hands-on experience with advanced construction technologies.
Generous support for the project includes a HK$300 million donation from the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation. The campus is slated for phased operations starting in the 2031/32 academic year and will feature public-accessible pedestrian footbridges, green walls, an auditorium, and multimedia lecture halls.
