Ai Luming, the founder of Wuhan Dangdai Science & Technology Industries Group, has been criminally detained by Chinese police on suspicion of illegally absorbing public deposits. The 69-year-old businessman is currently being held at a detention center in Wuhan, according to a social media post by his lawyer on August 4.
This detention represents a significant development for Dangdai, a conglomerate that was once a prominent symbol of private-sector growth in central China. At its peak, the company's assets were valued at over 100 billion yuan ($14.8 billion). However, the group has since buckled under substantial debt and questionable financing practices.
