Bruno Genesio has been appointed as the new coach of French football club Marseille, replacing Habib Beye. The club announced the decision on Wednesday, marking a new sporting cycle aimed at enhancing competitiveness after a turbulent season. Marseille finished fifth in Ligue 1, failing to secure a Champions League spot, and also faced a potential one-year ban from European competitions and a 10 million euro fine.
Genesio, known as a tactician, previously coached Lyon, Rennes, and Lille, earning coach of the year honors in 2022 and leading Lille to a third-place finish last season. He expressed his delight at joining the "unique club" with its "exceptional history" and passionate supporters.
Marseille, a nine-time Ligue 1 champion, has struggled for stability since American investor Frank McCourt acquired the club in 2016. The team has not won the French league since 2010 and last secured a trophy in 2012.
