Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has signed a five-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2030 season, owner and CEO Greg Penner announced Thursday. The new deal replaces Payton's previous contract, which was set to expire in 2027.
Penner stated that Payton has led an impressive turnaround over the past three seasons, instilling a winning culture and high expectations. He also highlighted the strong partnership between Payton and general manager George Paton, whose own contract was recently extended, ensuring alignment and stability in football operations.
Payton, 62, has a record of 33-21, including playoffs, in his three seasons with the Broncos. His overall career regular-season record stands at 184-108, with a 10-10 mark in the playoffs. He previously coached the New Orleans Saints for 15 seasons, leading them to a Super Bowl victory. In his first season in Denver, Payton's record was 8-9. In 2024, the team went 10-7, ending an eight-year playoff drought. Last season, the Broncos secured the AFC's top seed and advanced to the conference championship game.
Payton was scheduled to address reporters after an offseason practice on Thursday, along with offensive coordinator Davis Webb, to whom Payton has relinquished play-calling duties. Payton's 184 regular-season victories rank second among active NFL head coaches, behind only Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs.
