Assam is rapidly transforming into a prominent live entertainment hub within India, driven by strategic investments, progressive policies, and growing audience demand. A comprehensive report, 'The Assam Blueprint: Turning Live Music Economy into a Tourism Multiplier,' developed by BookMyShow in collaboration with the Assam Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. (ATDC) and EY-Parthenon, highlights this shift.
The report posits that a structured pipeline of major events could generate over Rs 700 crore in cumulative economic impact for Assam within the next five years. This projection is supported by the analysis of Post Malone's recent concert in Guwahati, which is estimated to have generated Rs 43 crore in total economic impact, injecting Rs 32 crore directly into the local economy and contributing Rs 5 crore in GST revenue.
The Post Malone concert drew approximately 20,000 attendees, with nearly 53% traveling from over 200 cities and towns across India. The economic multiplier effect was significant: for every Rs 100 spent on a ticket, attendees spent an additional Rs 899 on accommodation, travel, dining, and shopping. This surge led to a nearly 30% increase in hotel occupancy, over 50% growth in local transport demand, more than 33% increase in restaurant walk-ins, and over 30% rise in retail footfalls during the concert weekend.
Beyond direct economic benefits, the concert also boosted regional tourism, encouraging visitors to explore nearby attractions like Kaziranga National Park and Majuli Island, reinforcing Guwahati's role as a gateway to the North-East. The report identifies the North-East as one of India's fastest-growing live entertainment markets, with Assam hosting 55 ticketed events in 2025 and Guwahati seeing an 188% increase in live-event attendance.
The event also created approximately 2,500 short-term employment opportunities across security, hospitality, production, and logistics, involving local vendors. Officials from ATDC, BookMyShow, and EY-Parthenon emphasized the importance of ecosystem building, policy support, and public-private partnerships in transforming live entertainment into a sustainable economic driver and tourism multiplier for the region. Following Post Malone's performance, the state is set to host Guns N' Roses in November 2026.
