The government of Delhi has announced the implementation of permanent anti-pollution measures aimed at mitigating the severe air quality issues that plague the national capital territory during the winter months. These regulations will be in effect annually from November 1 to February 28, regardless of the prevailing air quality index (AQI) levels. This proactive approach signifies a shift from reactive measures to a consistent, year-on-year strategy for managing winter pollution.
Key components of the new policy include a doubling of parking fees across the city, which is intended to discourage private vehicle usage. Office timings will be staggered for government and private sector employees to reduce peak hour traffic congestion. Furthermore, a ban will be imposed on all non-essential construction activities, a significant contributor to particulate matter pollution during this season. A mandate for 50% of government and private office staff to work from home is also part of the plan, further aiming to decrease vehicular emissions and population density in commercial areas.
