Xiaomi, the Chinese technology conglomerate known for its smartphones and home appliances, has officially launched its SkyNomad SUV series. This move marks an expansion into the large-family SUV segment, a strategic push into China's highly competitive auto market. The company aims to boost its electric vehicle (EV) sales, which have so far reached only about one-third of its annual target in the first half of the year, amid a broader economic slowdown.
The SkyNomad series is positioned as an "intelligent, reconfigurable, large-space SUV," distinguishing itself from Xiaomi's existing SU7 sedan and YU7 SUV series that prioritize driving dynamics. The flagship N90 Max model, a seven-seat SUV, is designed to offer a spacious and adaptable interior, described by CEO Lei Jun as "a house you can move."
A key feature of the N90 Max is its extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) capability. It combines a 76-kilowatt-hour battery with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine acting as an onboard generator to recharge the battery or sustain electricity supply. This setup, along with a 60-liter fuel tank, allows for a combined range of up to 1,705 km (1,059 miles). The N90 Max is priced at 299,900 yuan ($44,397).
The SkyNomad line is built on Xiaomi's new Kunlun architecture, specifically developed for larger SUVs with adaptable cabins. Pre-orders for the vehicles begin on July 30, with market availability scheduled for September. Xiaomi also plans a European launch for its EVs next year.
