The gunman first fatally shot his grandparents before carrying out the school attack. Gun ownership and gun violence are not uncommon in Thailand.
Recent years have seen several other significant shooting incidents. In October 2022, a former policeman killed 36 people, including 22 children, in a gun-and-knife rampage in Nong Bua Lam Phu province. In February 2020, a soldier killed at least 29 people in and around Nakhon Ratchasima following a dispute over a property deal. In October 2023, a 14-year-old shot two people and wounded five others at the Siam Paragon shopping center using a modified pistol likely purchased online.
