South Korea's rice production is anticipated to fall for the fifth consecutive year, with output projected to reach 3.5 million tons in the 2026-2027 marketing year. This decline is attributed to government policies aimed at encouraging farmers to cultivate alternative crops and a structural shift in consumer habits. Per capita rice consumption is expected to continue its downward trend, falling to 53.9 kg in 2025 from 56.4 kg in 2023, as South Koreans increasingly favor wheat- and meat-based diets. The demand for home meal replacement products also contributes to reduced direct rice consumption, while simultaneously boosting demand for rice used in processed goods. Total wheat consumption, however, is forecast to rise to approximately 3.9 million tonnes in the same period, driven primarily by increased use of feed wheat. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs' policies to reduce rice production in line with declining demand are expected to limit the availability of excess rice for feed use.
