Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta to bolster strategic ties between the two nations. The discussions centered on enhancing cooperation in defense and security, trade and investment, food and energy security, and critical minerals, as well as capacity building in health and education.
Ahead of the talks, Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono indicated that eight agreements and several memorandums of understanding were anticipated. The meeting at the Merdeka Palace followed Modi’s arrival for a three-day visit, his second to Indonesia as prime minister. The visit underscores the growing importance of bilateral relations, particularly in the current geopolitical climate, with Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty emphasizing the need for closer ties between Global South leaders.
Defense cooperation was a prominent topic, with Indonesia showing significant interest in acquiring India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system. Broader maritime security collaboration was also discussed, given shared strategic interests in key shipping routes. Additionally, plans are underway to launch the Indonesia Open Network, a digital commerce platform modeled on India’s digital public infrastructure. Modi is also expected to announce an Indian-supported restoration project at the Hindu temple of Prambanan.
