BYD has emerged as a leading brand in Germany's plug-in hybrid vehicle market, a significant achievement in one of the world's most competitive automotive arenas. In May, one in every seven plug-in hybrid vehicles registered in Germany was a BYD, with the company's registrations surging 232% year-on-year.
With 4,290 plug-in hybrids registered, BYD secured the top spot in this segment, driven by its Atto 2 DM-i model, which was the best-selling plug-in hybrid in Germany for the month. This success contributes to BYD's overall global expansion, as its overseas sales reached a record 160,000 units in May, an 80% increase from the previous year.
BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu expressed optimism, stating that the company aims to become the world's largest carmaker by volume within five years. Overseas markets now represent over 41% of BYD's monthly sales, and the company is on track to exceed its 2026 target of selling 1.5 million vehicles outside China.
