WhatsApp has introduced a new username feature, allowing users to create a unique identifier that can be shared instead of their phone number. This move aims to enhance user privacy and give individuals more control over who can contact them. Users can begin reserving their chosen usernames, which must be between 3 and 35 characters, starting today. Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, stated that top celebrities, VIPs, and organizations will have their usernames reserved, and businesses and creators can align their WhatsApp username with their existing Facebook or Instagram handles.
The company noted that the username feature has been in development for several years and is designed to address the privacy concerns associated with sharing personal phone numbers. Alice Newton-Rex, Vice President and Head of Product at WhatsApp, emphasized that usernames provide a way to connect with new people without the immediate disclosure of a phone number, which is linked to many other personal aspects of a user's life.
While usernames will not be searchable within the app, users who know someone's exact username can initiate contact. The feature can be turned off or changed at any time. This functionality mirrors similar features already available on rival messaging platforms like Telegram, Signal, and Wire, which have long allowed users to maintain privacy through usernames.
