WeWard, an app that rewards users for logging steps, has introduced a new feature called 'Walking Mode.' This functionality enables users to set restrictions on specific applications, preventing access until a predetermined step count is achieved. The feature is designed to motivate users to increase their physical activity while simultaneously reducing their screen time.
Users can customize which apps are locked and set their desired step goals. For instance, a user might choose to lock social media apps like TikTok or Instagram until they complete 3,000 steps. Previously, WeWard incentivized walking through an in-app currency called 'Wards,' which could be redeemed for cash, gift cards, or donations, and also featured a gamified leaderboard.
With backing from tennis star Venus Williams, the France-based WeWard reports having 30 million users across 29 countries, including 4 million in the United States. The company claims its platform has been shown to increase walking time by nearly 25%.
WeWard co-founder Yves Benchimol stated that the company believes future products should foster healthier real-world behaviors rather than solely capturing user attention. He described 'Walking Mode' as a contribution to this vision, aiming to spark conversations about mindful design and industry success metrics. WeWard also noted that users spend only a few minutes daily within the app, which it views positively as it does not seek to monopolize attention.
Unlike some rewards apps that monetize by selling user data, WeWard generates revenue through in-app purchases, affiliate marketing, premium subscriptions, and advertising.
