Uber Chief Operating Officer Andrew Macdonald expressed that the company might require fewer employees in five years due to the increasing power of artificial intelligence. However, he tempered this statement by noting that Uber is also pursuing new initiatives that could necessitate more staff.
Macdonald highlighted that certain roles within Uber, such as customer support, sales, and content production, have a disproportionate number of employees and are well-suited for augmentation and eventual partial replacement by AI. He also pointed out that previous predictions about AI leading to workforce reductions have not consistently materialized, as companies continue to grow their employment.
Uber's overall employee count has risen by 54.4% in the last five years. The company recently laid off approximately 10% of its community operations team, a move attributed to simplifying operations, enhancing collaboration, and embracing AI. Uber currently employs around 36,600 people globally.
Macdonald also addressed earlier comments regarding Uber's AI spending, clarifying that the company is indeed seeing a return on investment, particularly in areas like financial forecasting and marketing quality assurance. However, he emphasized the difficulty in quantifying these returns and directly linking AI-driven process improvements to a reduction in headcount.
