Former Trump administration officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited the Energy Department's facilities at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to consult with nuclear experts. This meeting is part of ongoing efforts to prepare for potential nuclear negotiations with Iran, aiming for a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that could end the current conflict and address Iran's nuclear program. The U.S. and Iran are reportedly in the final stages of these negotiations, with the proposed MOU including provisions for extending a ceasefire, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and initiating talks on Iran's enriched uranium stockpile and future enrichment limitations. However, disagreements persist on key details, such as the deadline for down-blending Iran's enriched uranium (60 days proposed by the U.S. versus 90 days by Iran) and the release of frozen Iranian funds, with Iran seeking immediate release while the U.S. conditions it on a final deal and concrete implementation steps. The experts meeting with Witkoff and Kushner are part of a team of approximately 100 specialists who would be involved in implementing any potential nuclear deal, including plans for the disposal of nuclear material, limiting enrichment, and verifying compliance. Some of these experts previously participated in recovering enriched uranium from Venezuela and in earlier nuclear negotiations with Iran.
