- Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella believes trust in US AI technology will be a decisive factor against cheaper Chinese models.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that trust in US AI technology and its robust ecosystem will ensure its competitiveness against cheaper Chinese alternatives. He highlighted the US's 'ecosystem approach' and the ability to monitor open-weight Chinese models as key advantages.

The statement from Microsoft's CEO highlights the ongoing global competition in artificial intelligence, particularly between the US and China, and underscores the strategic importance of trust and ecosystem development in technological advancement.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella asserted that trust in American AI technology and its comprehensive ecosystem will ultimately prove more influential than the lower cost of Chinese AI models. Speaking on CNN's "GPS on CNN," Nadella responded to a question about whether Chinese technologies, such as Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, hold an edge due to their affordability.
Nadella explained that the United States has adopted an "ecosystem approach" to maintain the competitiveness of its digital sector. He emphasized that trust in US technology is paramount, noting that many Chinese AI models operate on American hyperscalers globally. Furthermore, he pointed out that the open-weight nature of these Chinese models allows US companies to monitor, test, and refine them.
"We became competitive because we took our technology, we built a rich ecosystem where others could participate, in other countries, and trust our stewardship of this ecosystem," Nadella stated. "And as long as that remains, we will absolutely be competitive, and we will win."
Microsoft has a substantial investment in the US AI landscape, holding approximately 27% of OpenAI's for-profit public benefit corporation. The company faces significant competition from Chinese AI firms, some of which have released advanced products that have impacted tech stocks. For instance, the emergence of DeepSeek last year was linked to a $1 trillion tech sell-off, signaling China's potential to rival US AI capabilities at a lower cost. In July, Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 model garnered attention for its capabilities in coding, reasoning, and knowledge work, which are seen as competitive with models from Anthropic and OpenAI.
