Roblox is enhancing its platform with Build, a new AI-powered tool that enables users to generate playable video games directly from text descriptions. This feature, housed within the Roblox mobile app, aims to democratize game development, particularly for younger players who may not have experience with traditional coding.
Build embodies the concept of 'vibe coding,' where artificial intelligence translates natural language prompts into functional game code. For instance, a user could request 'Let's make a cozy adventure game set in a dense forest with environmental obstacles,' and Build would generate a foundational game for them to refine, test, and share.
This move positions Roblox alongside other tech giants like Google with its Genie 3 and Microsoft with WHAM, which are also exploring AI-driven content creation. Since its inception in 2006, Roblox has fostered a community of user-generated games built using Roblox Studio, and Build represents a simplified, mobile-first extension of this creative ecosystem.
Roblox intends to commence testing of the Build feature in New Zealand on July 28. Initially, it will be accessible to users aged 9 and older who have undergone age verification. Published and verified games created with Build will be available to users aged 16 and older. The company plans to offer a basic version of the tool for free, with future paid options expected to provide more advanced functionalities.
