Hamad International Airport (HIA) and Qatar Airways have introduced a new biometric service, dubbed "Fast Pass," which utilizes facial recognition technology to facilitate a more paperless departure process for passengers. This initiative, developed in partnership with technology firm SITA, allows eligible Qatar Airways passengers flying from Doha to use their face as their primary identification at key airport checkpoints, reducing the need for traditional document checks.
The "Fast Pass" solution is described by HIA as one of the largest biometric passenger rollouts in the Middle East and globally, integrating with over 700 touchpoints throughout the airport. HIA stated that this scale demonstrates a potential standard for paperless passenger processing and that the service is expected to expand to more touchpoints and potentially other airlines in the future.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the adoption of biometrics in airports is growing, with 50% of passengers having used such technology in their airport journey in 2025, an increase from 46% in 2024. IATA also noted that 85% of passengers are satisfied with the biometric experience.
To register for the "Fast Pass," passengers must be 18 years or older, possess a valid passport, and have a journey originating in Doha. Registration can be completed once via the Qatar Airways mobile app or for each trip at HIA's self-service check-in kiosks. Participation is voluntary, and standard processing methods remain available. While the facial recognition system verifies enrollment, passengers are advised to carry their passports as they may still be required at immigration or e-gates if biometric verification is unsuccessful. HIA confirmed that designated checkpoints use automated facial detection solely to verify enrollment and that any incidentally captured biometric data is immediately deleted and not retained.
