Approximately 200 protesters marched through San Francisco on Saturday, demonstrating outside the offices of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind to demand a halt in the development of more powerful artificial intelligence models.
The demonstration, organized by Stop the AI Race and led by former AI researcher Michaël Trazzi, expanded beyond AI safety concerns to include issues such as job losses, the environmental impact of AI development, and rising housing costs in the city.
Protesters urged leading AI companies to cease training new frontier AI models and instead focus on improving the safety and alignment of existing systems. Organizers expressed a desire to increase political awareness of AI risks and encourage stronger regulatory oversight from lawmakers.
This protest follows a similar demonstration in March and has garnered support from various organizations, including the National Union of Healthcare Workers and AI Action. Organizers stated their intention to continue advocating for an international pause on frontier AI development.
