Italian luxury fashion house Prada has unveiled the inner-layer garment for NASA astronauts, marking a significant step into the burgeoning space industry. The body-hugging suit, developed in collaboration with Houston-based space infrastructure developer Axiom Space, features ventilation tubes knitted into the garment.
Prada's chief marketing officer, Lorenzo Bertelli, stated that expertise for space exploration products can come from various industries. This follows Prada's earlier unveiling of a spacesuit expected for NASA's Artemis 4 moon landing in 2028.
Luxury brand strategist Thomai Serdari noted that Prada's move goes beyond inspiration into an actual partnership, driven by the desire to access affluent consumers contemplating space travel and align with avant-garde thought. Luca Solca, global head of luxury goods at Bernstein, added that the resumption of space exploration will attract attention, helping luxury brands stay relevant.
Prada's push into space occurs as the broader luxury goods sector shows signs of stabilization after a period of contraction, though recent geopolitical events have impacted spending. Other apparel companies, such as Under Armour and Columbia Sportswear, have also entered the space apparel market through partnerships, but it remains uncertain if other high-end luxury brands will follow Prada's direct approach.
