Pinwheel, a company focused on children's technology, has introduced Pinwheel Home, a modern interpretation of the traditional landline phone. The device is designed for children aged 5 to 10, aiming to provide a way for them to stay connected through voice calls without the distractions and potential negative impacts associated with smartphones and social media.
The Pinwheel Home operates via Wi-Fi, eliminating the need for a traditional phone jack. Parents can manage the device through a dedicated Caregiver Portal, where they can approve contacts, block unwanted calls, and set calling schedules and time limits. The company highlights that this approach encourages meaningful conversations and helps children develop basic phone skills independently.
Two models are available: the Spark, starting at $68, and the Classic, priced at $79, which includes a retro handset and customizable stickers. Calls between Pinwheel Home devices are free through the Pinwheel Circle service. For calls to standard phone numbers, monthly plans begin at $6.99 for up to five approved contacts or $9.99 for unlimited calling. Future updates are planned to include three-way calling and integration with Pinwheel's existing watches and smartphones.
The launch comes amid increasing parental concern over children's screen time and its potential effects on development, with studies linking excessive use to social and behavioral challenges. Pinwheel Home enters a market with other screen-free communication products for children, such as Tin Can.
