Nvidia is reportedly in discussions to invest up to $3 billion in SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, to support the development of data centers for OpenAI. This potential investment is part of a larger framework that could involve around $100 billion in credit support for the construction of new AI infrastructure.
OpenAI and Nvidia have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on building data centers that will require a total of 10 gigawatts of power capacity. These facilities will be equipped with Nvidia's advanced chips to train and operate artificial intelligence models. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stressed the critical role of compute infrastructure for the future economy.
The agreement is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, with the first phase of the project, including the initial gigawatt of computing power, anticipated to come online in the latter half of 2026. Subsequent investments from Nvidia will be tied to the rollout of additional computing power.
Separately, SoftBank Group and OpenAI are jointly investing $1 billion into SB Energy, with each contributing $500 million. OpenAI has also secured a 1.2-gigawatt data center lease and selected SB Energy to build and operate a site in Milam County, Texas, as part of the broader 'Stargate' initiative to scale AI and energy infrastructure in the U.S. SB Energy has also secured an additional $800 million in financing from Ares.
Greg Brockman, Co-Founder and President of OpenAI, noted that the partnership with SB Energy combines their expertise in data center engineering with SB Energy's capabilities in infrastructure and energy development. Rich Hossfeld, Co-CEO of SB Energy, stated that the partnership accelerates the delivery of advanced AI data center campuses.
