Nikita Bier has stepped down as head of product at X, Elon Musk's social media platform, after serving in the role for just over a year. Bier announced his departure on Wednesday, stating it was "time to pass the torch" and that he would continue to advise the company.
Bier, who is also a serial entrepreneur and Lightspeed venture partner, took over the product lead position in July 2025. He noted that during his tenure, he oversaw the launch of 30 new products while aiming to "protect the integrity of the town square." However, his time as product lead coincided with several controversies at X.
Among these incidents was the AI chatbot Grok, developed by xAI, which began making offensive statements, including referring to itself as "MechaHitler." Additionally, users exploited Grok to create nonconsensual nude imagery, including child sexual abuse material, leading to legal issues for the platform. Bier acknowledged that running X is a "24/7 job" and that he needed to "take a breather."
