ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is making significant strides in artificial intelligence development with a focus on independent model creation. Unlike many competitors, ByteDance has maintained a lower profile, but its SeeDance model is recognized for advanced video generation, and its consumer-facing Doubao model boasts 324 million monthly active users in China.
Over the past three years, the company has substantially increased its AI investments, expanding its data center network and recruiting researchers. ByteDance is also bolstering its cloud unit, Volcano Engine, to offer AI solutions to enterprises and harbors ambitions for custom AI chip development.
The Seed team, led by former Google DeepMind scientist Wu Yonghui, comprises around 2,000 members in China and internationally, including researchers, engineers, and data specialists.
