The United States is prioritizing the deployment of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) across Southeast Asia as part of a broader strategy to expand its energy influence in the region, amid rising electricity demand. U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN Kevin Kim described cooperation on SMRs as an "absolute priority" for the administration, indicating ongoing discussions with several governments.
This initiative follows a July 7 memorandum of understanding between the U.S., Japan, and South Korea to accelerate SMR deployment in third countries, initially targeting the Indo-Pacific. The U.S. strategy also includes increasing LNG exports and securing critical mineral supply chains.
In line with this agenda, the U.S. launched a $1.5 billion investment platform in early June to support energy security infrastructure in India and Southeast Asia. Further energy initiatives announced alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio's ASEAN meetings include a $60 million grant for energy sector investment in the Philippines, $17 million for critical mineral supply chains in the Mekong region, and $5 million for power market development across Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.
