US Congressman Chuck Edwards Withdraws Re-election Bid Amid Ethics Probe

Edwards, a Republican representing the western part of the state since 2023, denied any wrongdoing. He stated in a social media post that he made the decision after prayer and reflection with his family, and intends to complete his current term, which concludes on January 3.

The House Ethics Committee's 25-page report noted that while Edwards cooperated, some "relevant messages" were deleted from his phone. One retrieved message included a photograph of 30 ice cream types sent to a staffer's home, prompting a reply that it seemed "excessive." The report also detailed gifts exceeding $1,000, such as jewelry, designer purses, guns, and a laptop, as well as paying for a staffer's trip to see "Hamilton" in New York after a breakup.

The committee concluded Edwards' actions failed to adhere to the spirit of rules prohibiting sexual harassment and unwanted advances, stating that a reasonable observer might interpret his behavior as such, despite his denial of intent. Edwards, a business owner, previously won his seat after defeating Madison Cawthorn, who also faced sexual misconduct allegations.
