U.S. federal agencies have confiscated over 600 drones near FIFA World Cup venues since the tournament commenced on June 11, according to statements from the Transportation Security Administration and the FBI. These seizures are part of an enforcement effort to maintain temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) around stadiums and associated fan event sites across all 11 U.S. host cities.
On match days, a strict no-fly zone is enforced within a three-nautical-mile radius and up to 3,000 feet above ground level around stadiums, unless specifically authorized by air traffic controllers. Violations of these TFRs, regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration, can lead to severe penalties, including civil fines up to $75,000, criminal fines up to $100,000, and potential imprisonment for up to one year, in addition to the seizure of the drone.
The FBI, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security and local law enforcement, has deployed advanced drone mitigation teams and technology to monitor, track, and intercept unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This proactive approach aims to ensure the safety of communities and visitors by keeping the skies clear of illegal drone operations.
Several individuals have already faced charges for violating these regulations. These include a man charged with operating without an airman's certificate and another for operating an unregistered aircraft near Dallas Stadium. In Houston, a Texas man was charged for illegally operating a drone too close to a World Cup event without proper licensing or registration.
