In a call with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Zelenskiy discussed reinvigorating diplomacy and moving towards an accord to end the conflict. Separately, Zelenskiy met with U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker in Kyiv to discuss the supply of Patriot air defense systems and a potential U.S.-Ukraine drone deal.
Zelenskiy stated that the conversation with Witkoff and Kushner was important for bringing peace closer, emphasizing that Ukraine is ready for peace with dignity. He noted that both sides would remain in close contact. The discussions with Whitaker focused on protecting Ukrainian skies with more Patriot interceptor supplies through the PURL initiative, a NATO- and U.S.-backed scheme for coordinating arms delivery. This comes as Ukraine continues to face significant Russian aerial attacks and has boosted its own drone strikes on energy targets within Russia.
Earlier in July, President Donald Trump had agreed with Zelenskiy at the NATO summit to grant Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot missile interceptors. The U.S. also committed to purchasing drones manufactured by Ukraine, a sector where Kyiv has developed significant capabilities.
