A 17-year-old high school senior was arraigned in juvenile court on charges of attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic weapon, and attempted second-degree robbery in connection with the shooting of San Francisco 49ers rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall. The district attorney's office has added several gun-related charges and is considering petitioning the court to transfer the case to adult court, as California law requires judicial approval for such transfers.
The teen's attorney, Bob Dunlap, told reporters after the hearing that his client is "genuinely very sorry" for what happened and that his thoughts are with the Pearsall family. Dunlap described the teen as "a young boy."
A probation officer recommended the teen be transferred to his home county of San Joaquin due to another pending matter, but Superior Court Judge Roger C. Chan ruled that the teen will remain in San Francisco custody. Family members of both the teen and Pearsall were present in the courtroom during the arraignment.
