A South Korean court has sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to two years in prison after finding him guilty of violating political funding and election laws. The sentencing recommendation was made by a special counsel team, which argued that Yoon's alleged false statements during the 2022 presidential campaign had an impact on the election results.
Yoon is accused of falsely claiming during a December 2021 debate that he did not introduce a lawyer to a former tax agency official. He also allegedly made false claims in a January 2022 interview regarding his introduction to a shaman named Jeon Seong-bae and meeting the shaman with his wife. Jeon Seong-bae has ties to Yoon's wife, Kim Keon Hee, and was previously sentenced to five years in prison for accepting bribes.
Should Yoon be convicted and receive a fine of 1 million won or more, his political party, the People Power Party (PPP), may be required to return approximately 39.7 billion won in reimbursed election expenses from the 2022 presidential election.
