South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met with his Guatemalan counterpart, Carlos Martinez, in Seoul to discuss enhancing bilateral ties. A key focus of their discussion was the early completion of Guatemala's accession to the Korea-Central America Free Trade Agreement (FTA). South Korea's existing FTA with five Central American nations took effect in 2021, and Guatemala has completed its domestic ratification procedures to join the pact.
The ministers also agreed to broaden development cooperation, particularly in sectors like climate change and public administration, recognizing Guatemala as a significant partner for South Korea's development assistance in Central America. They exchanged perspectives on significant regional developments affecting both the Korean Peninsula and Latin America.
Martinez highlighted the shared values of democracy, free trade, and respect for international law between Guatemala and South Korea, expressing readiness for close collaboration.
