An open letter signed by over 155 scientists, physicians, and public health advocates has called for an end to what they describe as the "vilification and harassment of many American scientists" by the Trump administration and its allies. The letter was published ahead of a high-profile hearing where Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), is scheduled to testify before the Republican-controlled Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
The scientists and physicians dismissed allegations against Fauci, who led the NIAID for 38 years before leaving the federal government in 2022, as "baseless." They allege that the Trump administration and its congressional allies are "waging a war on individual scientists, through public harassment, arrests, criminal indictment and ongoing threats of prosecution." The letter states that while several scientists have faced scrutiny, Fauci has been the "most prominent target."
Specific accusations against Fauci, including claims of covering up the origins of COVID-19, bribing other scientists, holding patents on the virus, and working with intelligence agencies to suppress information, are called "absurd charges" with "no credible evidence." The signatories noted that these allegations have led to a "five-year period of harassment and threats of violence directed at Dr Fauci and his family."
Senator Rand Paul, who chairs the committee, released thousands of Fauci's diary entries prior to his testimony. Fauci has consistently stated that research strongly suggests the coronavirus emerged through natural origins but maintains an "open mind" about other possibilities, including a lab leak theory, which he denies suppressing.
