R. Kelly has formally appealed to President Donald Trump for a reduction of his 31-year prison sentence. The singer, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is serving time for convictions related to racketeering, sex trafficking, and child abuse images. He was found guilty in 2021 of leading a criminal enterprise and sentenced to 30 years, and in 2022 was convicted on child abuse image charges, receiving an additional 20-year sentence. His combined sentence totals 31 years, with eligibility for release not until January 2046.
The request for commutation was revealed in court records made public by the Department of Justice's office of the pardon attorney. Kelly's lawyer, Beau Brindley, has been publicly advocating for clemency for over a year. The filing is specifically for commutation, not a full pardon, and is currently listed as pending.
Previously, Brindley filed an emergency motion seeking Kelly's immediate release to home detention, citing alleged threats to his life within prison. This motion was denied. Kelly has consistently denied all allegations against him.
