Authorities are searching for additional individuals who fired weapons during a shooting at Virginia State University that left five people wounded, police said Sunday. A 19-year-old suspect, Camron Harris, remains in custody as investigators work to unravel the events that led to the shooting.
Lt. James Lamb, commander of the Chesterfield County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, stated that investigators are trying to determine if other individuals who discharged firearms did so in self-defense or were among the aggressors. He did not specify how many others fired weapons.
The shooting occurred just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday near the university’s Quad Annexes, prompting a campus lockdown. Campus police and Chesterfield County officers discovered five individuals with gunshot wounds outside dormitories. The victims ranged in age from 17 to 23, and only one was a student at the university. Harris, who is not a student, was found in a dormitory closet more than 14 hours after the incident.
Harris is being held without bond and faces four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. His court date is set for Monday.
