Green Party leader Zack Polanski has asserted that incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham is too beholden to 'vested interests' to enact meaningful change, particularly on issues like wealth taxes, rent controls, and climate policy. Polanski, whose party has seen significant membership growth and is polling closely with Labour, plans a media blitz to counter the perception that Burnham will usher in a more left-leaning agenda.
In a social media post, Polanski suggested Burnham's reported decision to appoint Shabana Mahmood over Ed Miliband as chancellor indicated subservience to the City of London. The Green Party's strategy involves highlighting what they term Burnham's 'semi-skimmed' approach to policies, contrasting it with their own 'full-fat' proposals, which they claim are supported by polling data. These include implementing rent controls, a separate wealth tax, and a ban on UK arms exports to Israel.
Polanski criticized Burnham's stance on nationalizing the water industry, preferring 'public control,' and his openness to further fossil fuel drilling in the North Sea, despite climate concerns. The Green leader stated the country is 'at breaking point' due to high rents, water bills, climate impacts, and the conflict in Gaza, arguing that only bold action can address these issues.
