New York City police are investigating a pair of stabbings that occurred near Central Park as a potential hate crime. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the suspect, identified as Raul Morales, allegedly attacked a 57-year-old Asian man with a knife and a 50-year-old Jewish man with a screwdriver. Morales reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" before carrying out the assaults, which took place about two blocks apart in Manhattan's Upper West Side.
Both victims were taken to Mount Sinai hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. While initial reports suggested both victims were Jewish, it was later clarified that the Asian victim was not. Police are also examining the possibility that mental health issues may have contributed to Morales's actions, despite no known prior mental health history with the NYPD. There is no known connection between the suspect and either victim, or between the victims themselves.
Following the attacks, Morales, 51, returned to his apartment. A witness observed him entering the building and alerted the police, who were then able to locate and apprehend him. Commissioner Tisch commended the witness for their bravery in assisting the officers. The New York City Mayor condemned the incidents, emphasizing that such hateful acts are not tolerated in the city.
